Int’l Day of Disabled Persons On Dec 3: LIUPCP’s Workshop On Disability Inclusion

RAJENDRAPUR, NOVEMBER 30 (2019): As the International Day of Disabled Persons will be observed on December 3 in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world, Livelihoods Improvement of Urban Poor Communities Project (LIUPCP) has taken up different initiatives to observe the day.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Building on many decades of UN’s work in the field of disability, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has further advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other international development frameworks, such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Charter on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action, the New Urban Agenda, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development.

This year, the theme of the International Day of Disabled Persons is: Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda.

The focus this year is on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as anticipated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as a cross-cutting issues, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ahead of the observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons, LIUPCP  organized a two-day workshop here at Rajendrapur to develop a common understanding on disability issues among the project staffs and identify different areas of integration and inclusion of persons with disability in project implementation.

LIUPCP National Project Director Abdul Mannan formally inaugurated the workshop. Ashikur Rahman, Head of Poverty and Urbanization, UNDP Bangladesh, Yugesh Pradhanang, International Technical Advisor and Dr. Nafeesur Rahman, Consultant for Disability Inclusion of LIUPCP and Mohammad Alamgir Husan, Nutrition Coordinator, were also present.

 

“LIUPCP intends to make cities more inclusive for persons with disabilities, especially those who are poor, through a number of different yet complementary initiatives. These are intended to ensure that they receive additional support, but that also their interests and needs are served in the future,” LIUPCP National Project Director Abdul Mannan said.

He said disability inclusion in the project interventions require technical knowledge and understanding by project key staffs. “This workshop will help to develop necessary knowledge and understanding on disability inclusion issues and will enable the key staffs to explore the scope of disability inclusion in the existing project activities,” Abdul Mannan said.

LIUPCP’s interventions range from direct approaches that favor the selection of beneficiaries for grants based on their disability, to indirect approaches such as encouraging advocacy and the inclusion of disabled people’s interests in pro-poor planning and policy-making.

 

Disability is referenced in various parts of the SDGs and specifically in parts related to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, as well as data collection and monitoring of the SDGs.
